H Day Conference call 4
July 6, 2006

On call: Carol WILPF, Ralph OREPA, Shannyn LAPP, Tara TVC, Andrew NAPF, 
JoAnn WRL, Mavis Peace Farm, David Bettis.

Brief updates: OREPA, nothing new; Los Alamos: sent press release and 
postcard (Pax Christi and others on Aug 5); Livermore will have 
hibakusha; WILPF branches; New York has not made definite plans, Frida 
talking with Monicka; Boston UFPJ probably not doing Bechtel;

Events are being listed on August6.org.

ACTION/EDUCATION: Ideas on last call: Bechtel communications 
action?call/fax/e-mail deluge; fact sheet with info on Bechtel?s 
contributions to Congress; postcard on House Resolution _____

JoAnn:  Frida said doing Bechtel piece might be a little challenging; 
Bechtel is 22nd largest recipient of Pentagon money, but this doesn?t 
include DOE money. Bechtel?s total rev last year was $22B. How do find 
who in Congress is getting contributions: Frida sent some links that 
show how to track this down. Bechtel is listed #7 among gov?t 
contractors on Open Secrets website (opensecret.org). In this cycle, 
about $150,000 to Congress (76% to Republicans). Someone needs to check 
out the web site and see how extensive the list is.

Is this enough material to do the leaflet we are thinking about. If 
someone else can do some of the DOE stuff to follow up?Carol said she 
can see if WILPF can help; Shannyn will check with Nuclear Watch NM to 
see if they have this info.

Send info we find to the listserv. We need to make decision that we 
have enough to go on. Can do the check pretty simply if we use totals.

Tara: Los Alamos Study Group has some of these numbers. See if Scott or 
Jay at Nuclear Watch has these numbers. LASG says 100 billion (if it?s 
Billion, it?s over 10 years or more).

Postcard from Shannyn address overall picture (not Bechtel). Suggestion 
that people e-mail Shannyn if they are interested in participating in 
postcard. LosALamosPeaceProject.us.

CALL IN ACTION?
	> specific legislation: Carol ? co-sponsors for Woolsey HR373; 
Kucinich to introduce bill calling for Treaty to abolish nuclear 
weapons. Carol can send Andrew what we did last year if Jackie hasn?t 
done a redraft (were going to add cf to Hans Blix) and we can use 
sunflower graphic from last year. Have text for Kucinich card, need # 
when he introduces it. Carol will check with Jackie (back on Monday, 
Tara thinks).
	Timeline: we want them up by the end of July in a format that we can 
post and print off our own. can put up on August6.org. then we would 
want an alert for e-action that week. We can incorporate that into the 
stuff that we are sending out.
	Message: Tara, Jackie & Carol would be good to give feedback.

MEDIA PLAN
	We need media advisory. (Last year we did basic media 
advisory/hibakusha; then we sent it again with quotes)
	Message: national coordination, us nuclear weapons facilities, bechtel 
facilities?
		do we want to tie it together with money? do we have enough facts?
		taxation without representation?private corporation doing our 
policy/building our bombs. outsourcing nuclear policy to private 
companies. violation of nonproliferation treaty.
		privatization of national security rather than public policy. loss of 
democracy, accountability. outsourcing of national security. 
outsourcing foreign and military policy.
		nuclear policy run amok
		america?s nuclear double standard.
		when private companies are in charge, profit is bottom line?not 
security, result is more proliferation, less security.
		revolving door: Secretaries of State corporate ties.
		
Draft for next week, ready to go the following week. Ralph, Tara will 
do a draft and circulate it to the list for feedback. We need Jackie 
and David?s input on it. We want to simplify and have a media hook?

Weapons programs growing, Bechtel profiting, nuclear policy privatized, 
Bechtel profiting, nuclear proliferation, Bechtel profiting, power 
plants being rebuilt, Bechtel profiting, energy policy in chaos, 
Bechtel profiting.

How are we  going to work the national media? WILPF has list on website.
Tara is happy to work on the target list, but we need help with making 
the national calls. Andrew can get someone to help make those calls 
with some media experience. Can check with UFPJ to see if they can help 
(Tara will follow up with them).
