I'm sending this again. It is the latest draft with revisions suggested by
Jackie Cabasso. We have until Monday, July 31 to finalize it. We may have
to remove the reference to Kucinich's bill. It has not yet been submitted
to Congress (he told us he is gathering co-sponsors first). Congress is
scheduled for adjournment during August and chances it will be submitted
before that seem slim.

Hi Carol,
I'm not on the UFPJ list. Do you know how I can be added?
Here's a word version that you can edit.

Hi Jackie,
I am sending this just to you and Andrew so we can straighten out the post
card and send out an agreed text before the Wednesday phone call. I don't
think Andrew is on the UFPJ list, and if not he should be added. Then he
can be on the call also if he has time. He has done a great job crafting
the card. He is with the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.
Re the text, I will accept your changes of course. Is the phrase in italics
actually a quote from the report? If so, it would be good to put it in
quotes.
As for the rest of the text - we may not be able to get the bill number for
the Kucinich resolution. A WILPF Kucinich constituent and campaign worker
tried through his office with no good result. I tried his D.C. office twice
but thus far have received no helpful information. Yoshiko and I can try
again, but I am pessimistic. Have you heard anything from Alyn Ware? We
will have to do it with the title but no number, or else drop it.
I'll point out that the quote I used in the text going to the
Congresspersons did come from the Weapons of Terror report, and is from Blix
himself on page 15.
Jackie, I like the idea of adding websites under the picture on the back.
ABOLITION 2000 is not up-to-date. Very little has been updated since before
the 2005 NPT and I can't find links with the member organizations. UFPJ has
a statement on No Nukes! No Wars! but I don't find any links. MacGregor has
raved about the links to pro-abolition groups on your WSLF website. RCW has
great information for those willing to dig a little. I think we need to
think about what websites to suggest. ANA has the nuke watchers and
excellent info on the U.S. programs. Maybe UFPJ, WSLF, ANA and RCW would
take care of it.
Finally if there is a version in RTF or Word instead of or in addition to
PDF groups can edit it. Some might want to put more local information, like
names of local Congresspersons, on the back of the tear off. (I've been
horrified since returning to the U.S. to find how many citizens - including
those in the Peace movement -- don't know the name of their own
Representative in Congress.) Some might prefer to skip the tear off (which
requires scissors) and just use a full half sheet size on heavy stock. This
can work well if most of the cards are hand delivered to the local
Congressional office. Congress is on recess in August anyway.

Dear Carol, et al -- Thanks to you and Andrew for taking the lead on this
postcard. Per our conversation last week, I am proposing some rewrites and
additions, mostly to improve factual accuracy. FYI. the quote attributed
to Blix on the tear-off is not from the Blix report - it is from John
Burroughs' op-ed in the Chicago Sun! I've replaced it with a quote from the
actual report. (also attached in Word). Le me know what you think. Thanks
again. -- Jackie
Dear Representative_________________________________________________________
The June 2006 report of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission chaired
by Hans Blix concluded that dangers posed by existing nuclear arsenals,
proliferation to more countries, and potential acquisition by terrorists can
be solved only by working towards elimination of all nuclear weapons, and
that proliferation must be reversed where it began: in the United States.
Please help the US take the lead in ending the threat of nuclear terror. I
urge you to co-sponsor H. Res. 373, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
(NPT) Commitments Act, introduced by Rep. Lynne Woolsey. It calls on the
President to implement and observe all NPT obligations and commitments, and
to revise national nuclear weapons policies accordingly. These include the
13 practical steps toward nuclear disarmament agreed to by the US at the
2000 NPT Review Conference.
Please also co-sponsor H. Res. ___________ introduced by Rep. Dennis
Kucinch, calling on the President to initiate negotiations on a global
treaty to eliminate nuclear weapons.

[tear-off sheet]
NO MORE HIROSHIMAS! NO MORE NAGASAKIS!
The question of how to reduce the threat and the number of existing nuclear
weapons must be addressed with no less vigour than the question of the
threat from additional weapons, whether in the hands of existing nuclear
weapon states, proliferating states or terrorists." - Blix report, June 2006
Please send the attached postcard and keep this as a reminder to call your
Representative and say: Its time for the US to take the lead in ending the
threat of nuclear terror.
*Urge your Representative to co-sponsor Rep. Lynne Woolseys H. Res. 373
which calls on the President to implement the 13 practical steps towards
nuclear disarmament agreed to by the US at the 2000 NPT Review Conference
*Urge your Representative to co-sponsor Rep. Dennis Kucinichs House

NO NUKES! NO WARS!
Suggestion: under mushroom cloud/tree photo, add: www.unitedforpeace.org;
www.abolition2000.org; and www.wmdreport.org
[By way of explanation: I suggest changing the heading from NO MORE
HIROSHIMAS! NO MORE NAGASAKIS! to NO NUKES! NO WARS! since that is the
slogan originally meant to accompany this logo, and since it is more
open-ended. Since the logo is on the tear-off sheet that is meant to be
kept by the person sending the postcard, it would be good to add some
websites where they can get more information. Most of the groups involved
in this campaign are affiliated with UFPJ and Abolition 2000, and many of
them are linked to these two sites. The wmdreport.org site is dedicated to
civil society review of the Blix Commission report, which is referenced in
both the postcard text and the tear-off text.]

Al Marder did not receive this so I am resending it. We need to finalize it
by close of business
Monday 24. I will call Kucinichs office for progress on his Resolution.
Comments welcome.

Andrew has come up with a front and back for the post card.Beautiful.
Alternatively, the back of the tear off section could be used for phone
numbers of local office of the Representatives in the area.

Dear All,
Here, before Wednesdays call, is a draft post card produced by Andrew Culp
and myself. We still need the number for Kucinichs resolution, of course.
I like the idea of a tear off that the person signing would keep that urges
a telephone call as follow up. Actually, though, Congress will be in
recess, but key staff might still be at work in D.C.
Your comments are welcome. If any one wants to read the texts of the bills
you can find the text and list of co-sponsors for H Res 373 on Thomas at
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:h.res.00373 .. WILPF has other
details, last years post card and talking points on WILPF DISARM UPDATE at
http://disarm.wilpf.org/July-August%2006/HRes373ja.htm .. The Kucinich bill
is not yet on Thomas but the text is on the WILPF DISARM UPDATE at
http://disarm.wilpf.org/July-August%2006/Kuchinichbill.htm .. Someone needs
to call his staff to find out if indeed he is introducing it and when. (A
WILPF member talked with his local staff but they knew nothing about it.)
The card would also have an address side, similar to the one we used last
year for the card on H Res 373.
August is the long Congressional Recess so actually the best use of the
cards would probably be to distribute them at the event and then collect
the signed cards and hand deliver them to the local office. Of course it
would be good to request a meeting with the Representative which might be
possible during this period, otherwise it should be with the local chief of
staff.
In peace, Carol Urner
