Our organization has been working for over 90 years to replace the horrors
of war and rule by military force with international institutions and the
rule of law. WILPF has won two Nobel Peace Prizes for these efforts.
Although we would have been happier with the prize of lasting peace, we
rejoice that  the world has made much progress in this direction since the
nuclear bombing of Hiroshima/Nagasaki and the founding of the United Nations
in 1945. Our own national U.S. leaders have contributed much to this
process, assisting in the development of the web of UN human rights and
disarmament treaties that have brought us much closer to the peace and
freedom most humans want. However, the dangerous nuclear weapons and
aggressive war policies of our current U.S. Administration and Congress are
now putting the entire human race at risk.  We believe these policies are
driven in part by the war profiteers like Bechtel, Lockheed, Raytheon,
Boeing, Northrup-Grumman-TRW and others who make billions from the nuclear
weapons, missile and space militarization industries.  We in the U.S. can
not continue to base our economy or our foreign policy on the ways of death
and destruction, for in the end it will lead to the death and destruction of
us all and all we love and hold dear.  It is time to return to support of
the United Nations, and the step-by-step process of eliminating nuclear
weapons and their delivery systems from the world's arsenals.  It is also
time to join the European Union and the rest of the world community in
working together for a warless world with human security and human rights
for all.

Jackie, thanks for your wonderful work on this.  I don't see anything in the
WHAT, however, about our call for a return to support of the Nuclear Weapons
Non-Proliferation Treaty, for honoring the 13 practical steps toward nuclear
weapons abolition agreed on by 187 UN members including the U.S. in 2000,
and for leadership in the negotiation of a treaty abolishing nuclear
weapons.  

Also, relative to that, I would like to see mention of " groups will be
calling for support of H.R. 373, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Commitment
Act introduced by Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey (D California) and for H Con
Res 950 calling for U.S. leadership in the negotiation of a treaty
eliminating nuclear weapons  and introduced by Representative Dennis
Kucinich, (D Ohio.)

Dear all -- Attached in Word is my draft media advisory for Aug. 5 - 9.  I'm
sorry it took me an extra half day, but it was a real challenge.  As you'll
see, I've incorporated a brief description of "why" into the "what" section
at the top, and am proposing to eliminate the "why" section.  This is partly
for length and partly political.  To try and explain each of the issues and
connections, quickly starts to turn into an essay.  I think the quotes will
fulfill the same purpose.  Speaking of quotes, as you'll see we don't have
most of them yet.  PLEASE REVIEW  THE ADVISORY AND SEND YOUR COMMENTS TO ME
BY MID-DAY MONDAY.  PLEASE CHECK THE LIST OF PEOPLE WHO SAID THEY'D SUBMIT
QUOTES AT THE END, AND IF YOU'RE ON IT, PLEASE SEND ME A QUOTE!  Our plan is
to finalize this on Tuesday and send it out on Wednesday.  [Note that I've
indicated a few questions and comments in square brackets, like this]
Obviously the formatting will need to be worked out.
