[Organize] Aug 6 and 9 call Bechtel, Nukes and War

Dear all -- My apologies, but I won't be able to be on today's call. The World Peace Forum in Vancouver wrapped up last night, and I'll be travelling. I'm pretty happy about the Forum in general. 5,000 people were registered, and nuclear abolition was a high priority. Our Aug. 6 - 9 call seemed to resonate well with the generally growing desire to "connect the dots." Hope today's call is productive. I look forward to reading the notes. -- Jackie

>2. Call to Action
>
>David did great job on draft, Jackie did some revisions (some may not
>have gotten it). Jackie thinking we should highlight some of our main
>points. Carol notes absence of Lawrence Livermore (want to be sure to
>get all sites). David asks re: Bechtel and Livermore (Bechtel will bid
>on contract and currently subcontracts).
>Other comments
>Leslie: Maybe shift organization, tighten it up. Make actual call short
>and punchy and then background material follows.
>Tara: would like indigenous people support in headline (Aug 9). Add
>?Support indigenous peoples? in heading.
>Request for more positive (Peace rather than No War). Jackie notes
>slogan No Nukes, No Wars has some history of trying to link anti-war and
>anti-nuclear movements.
>David: sovereignty issue ? catch phrase with good meter and intensity is
>a challenge.
>Leslie: not specific on ending war in Iraq ? would like to see specificity
>Melissa: could use main slogan as unifying thread and then add our local
>pieces (Seek peace, be part of the solution is our local one).
>David: Seems like two issues?slogan and incorporating more specific
>language of Iraq and nukes.
>
>Process?
>Use the list?circulate a final draft and give 24 hours? Jackie will be
>guardian, needs feedback instantly, will redraft by Tuesday afternoon,
>comments by end of Wednesday.
>
>
>Relationship with UFPJ
>Jackie talks about overlap of UFPJ disarmament/security working group
>and the August 6-9 coalition and would like our coalition to send the
>call up to UFPJ for its adoption.
>Carol: I like it. Better recognition
>Leslie: UFPJ has done calls before that lists active UFPJ groups and
>notes that we are actively working with other groups. Don?t want other
>groups lost in shuffle or otherwise unacknowledged for work?spell out
>names of other groups.
>Jackie: can we also have a sign-on on the web site.
>David: other dimension is that call is projecting in more specific way
>our efforts. Happy with this direction.
>Melissa: in agreement.
>
>3. Website & Outreach
>David has launched site. Ready to update if we approve slogan and call.
>Do local groups want a subdomain to piece out local sections? Or blocks
>on the start page? Calendar module, resources, other articles, etc is
>something anyone can post to if we have log-in, etc. Proposal: #1 once
>we have final slogan for call we project it on web site as Start page.
>#2, use subdomains for local groups. #3 subcommittee or working group to
>deal with site overall.
>Direct links from Aug 6 to other sites putting on events possible.
>Carol: list of all H-Day events? Someone kept last year (Be Safe?)
>Tara: Last year it was Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and Abolition 2000.
>Tara: Could each site prepare a brief event announcement for web site so
>people can click to list.
>David: people can post their own info direct to web site and maintain
>their own information on the web site. Doesn?t preclude an announcement
>which we will need for media, etc. My proposal is to give each site
>access to its own site page. Fill out form and click submit.
>Leslie: want to get Susan at UFPJ in the loop; I think if David and
>Susan talk they can handle the details.
>
>#2 In addition to local site pages, David can collect info and post it
>to update their sections.
>
>#3 Other people interested in overall site discussion can be included in
>discussions with David. David will send announcement to list.
>
>Outreach ? Marshall Islands ? WILPF is working on it and can bring it
>in. Jackie: WAND chapter active in Atlanta, might be contact on Savannah
>River. David: contact sites not represented and Bechtel office sites?can
>we contact them re: actions (like Louisville KY and Richmond, VA).
>Anyone interested in finding groups in those areas?
>Leslie UFPJ can do some outreach.
>Ralph: Good contacts in Louisville KY and with WAND Atlanta. Louisville
>likely; Savannah River not so likely, given history, this year.
>David will help identify targets from the Bechtel list.
>
>
>5. Research & materials ? Fact Sheet on Bechtel ? deferring
>Frida is working on a fact sheet, should have draft this week. Will send
>friendly reminder. David will see her later in the week.
>
>6. Media - deferring
>
>
>7. Next Call: Thursday, June 29, 2:00pm Eastern, 11:00 Pacific, various
